Barnes-Harris Scholarship Endowment A Project of Academic Affairs

Providing Dedicated Support, Continuing a Legacy

For more than 20 years, the Barnes-Harris Scholarship Endowment has paid homage to Marvis Evon Barnes '59 and Myra Ann Harris '59, the first African American graduates of Towson University (then Maryland State Teachers College at Towson). Originally established through the tireless efforts of G.O.L.D. (Granting Opportunity for Learning and Development) Associates, a dedicated union of African American alumni, the scholarship is awarded each year to an exemplary incoming freshman from a metropolitan high school who demonstrates a strong allegiance to the African American culture and also demonstrates financial need.

How Can You Help?

You have the power to continue a legacy like the one Mrs. Barnes and Ms. Harris established at Towson. During the month of February 2017, we set an initial goal of $1,000 to help area students follow in their footsteps at TU, and met it on day one! We raised our goal twice more throughout the month, and ended up raising nearly $7,000! Don't let the history Mrs. Barnes and Ms. Harris made be forgotten - join those who have honored the tremendous legacy of these women by making a gift to the Barnes-Harris Scholarship Endowment today!
